How to chang user account?

Filled under:

The User Account Control (UAC) settings in Windows 7 notify you before computer changes that require an administrator account are made. You can change the User Account Control notification setting to one that is more secure or less secure than the default setting.
Follow these steps to change the UAC notification setting:

  1. Open the Windows Control Panel, and then click System and Security.
The System and Security window appears.
  2. Click Action Center.
    The Action Center window appears.
  3. In the left pane, click Change User Account Control Settings.
The User Account Control Settings dialog box appears, as shown in the figure below.
Change the UAC setting in the User Account Control Settings dialog box.
Change the UAC setting in the User Account Control Settings dialog box.
  4. Slide the vertical bar (on the left side) to your desired setting and click OK.

There are four possible UAC settings, described as follows:
  • Always notify. This is the most secure option. It notifies you anytime a program tries to make changes to your computer or to Windows settings. When you are notified of a pending change, your desktop is dimmed (to prevent other programs from running until a decision is made), and you must either approve or deny the change in the UAC dialog box.
  • Notify me only when programs try to make changes to my computer. This is the default setting. Windows notifies you anytime a program tries to make changes to your computer or if a program outside of Windows attempts to make changes to a Windows setting.
  • Notify me only when programs try to make changes to my computer (do not dim my desktop). Same as the previous setting, except the desktop is not dimmed, which may allow some malicious programs to alter the appearance of the dialog box.
  • Never notify. This is the least secure setting. If you’re logged on as a standard user, changes that require administrator permissions will be denied. If you’re logged in as an administrator, those changes will be automatically permitted, potentially exposing your computer, network, and personal information to security risks.

Use "User Accounts" in Control Panel to Change "Your" User Account Type
    1. Open the Control Panel (Large icons view), and click on User Accounts.

    2. Click on the Change your account type link. (see screenshot below)

    3. If prompted by UAC, then click on Yes (administrator) or enter the administrator's password (standard user).

    4. Select (dot) what type of user account (Standard user or Administrator) you want this user account to be now, and click on the Change Account Type button. (see screenshot below)
NOTE: If the user account is originally an administrator account, then Windows 7 will not let you change it to a standard user account unless you already have another administrator account on the computer.

    OPTION TWO
Change "Another" User Account's Type in "User Accounts" in Control Panel

    3. If prompted by UAC, then click on Yes (administrator) or enter the administrator's password (standard user).

    4. Click on the Administrator or Standard user account that you want to change the type of. (see screenshot below)
NOTE: If this is a guest account type, and not the actual default "Guest" account, then the only way to change it's type would be to change it to an Administrator account type first. Afterwards, you will be able to leave it as Administrator, or be able to change it to a Standard User account type.
